Russia

We believe every disciple must mature into serving others.

Jesus spent time teaching his disciples to learn to live as God intended.THEN... Jesus sent his disciples out to live what they learned through serving the church (other believers) and through serving the world (the poor, the afflicted, the abused, the hurt, the lonely, the forgotten, the outsiders).

Russia has an estimated 900,000 orphans. That is the equivalent to 30 times the population of New Bern. We have partnered with Children's Hope Chest to provide support and sponsorship to orphans in Russia.
Join the effort!

“Journey of the Heart” Medical Mission
Kostroma Region / Russia
April 11-20, 2012
Kostroma / Nehretka / Makariev / Kovalyovo

Throughout the years, volunteers from our church have traveled to Russia where we can interact with the kids, bringing lots of fun and hugs and the message of Christ. GUMC has been key in providing financial support for CHC’s programs, including eye examinations, vocational training, medical assistance and more. There is also a life skills program that helps kids prepare for life outside the orphanage. Russian orphans are often sent back into society at age 18 and some as early as 16 - with little support. Many orphans become involved in crime or prostitution; 10% commit suicide.   During our trip to Russia in April of 2012, we will bring our second medical “team.” This November, a “building” team went to represent Garber with five travelers. In January, 2011, we were able to do vision, dental and general medical examinations and to build upon our previous trips and CHC’s year-round ministry to the kids. We will be celebrating the orthodox Easter on April 15 with the kids from both orphanages sharing God’s love with us. We were able to do this for the first time Christmas of 2011 and to quote Anne Robertson, “I saw God smile as He looked at His children together.” We will spend one week in Russia doing medical procedures and sharing God’s love with the kids. We will renew old relationships and make new friendships.   Thanks to GUMC’s continuing generosity and the support of fundraising efforts, we will be able to send a team to represent all of you. If you are interested in being a team member, there will be application forms available to you in the church office on November 7th. An informational meeting will be scheduled in the very near future. In the interim, if you have any questions, please call Dianne Powell, Trip Leader, at 634-9468. If you are part of this team – we promise – you will never, ever forget it.
