FEELING EMPTY?... FUEL
RUN 4 DARFURWednesday 26MARCH Runner/Walker Check In at 7:00amRun 4 Darfur is a 35 mile relay across Craven County on Wednesday 26MARCH. The purpose of the relay is to raise awareness for the crisis in Darfur, a western province in Sudan. Over 400,000 people have been killed in Darfur by the Sudanese government and it's supported Arab militia the "Janjaweed" since 2003. More than 2.5 million people have been "displaced" and over 3.5 million people are completely dependent on international aid for survival.
We are running this torch relay because 2008 is the year of the Olympics hosted by China. China buys about two-thirds of Sudan's oil. The Sudanese government then uses the majority of it's oil profits to buy weapons and aircraft, mostly made by China. The weapons are turned over to the Janjaweed, which burns, dismembers, rapes, and kills Darfur's villagers and destroys their land. China maintains it doesn't interfere with internal Sudanese politics and has used that policy to block UN efforts to send a peacekeeping force into Darfur.
This relay is our PROTEST of China as host of the Olympics while it remains the biggest banker of genocide in Africa. It is our call of awareness for our neighbors to see what the media doesn't report. For more information go to www.savedarfur.com and www.dreamfordarfur.org.
Runners/walkers will check in at Twin Rivers Mall at 7:00am on Wednesday 26MAR and be taken by shuttle to two starting lines at both ends of Craven County: one in Trenton and the other in Havelock.
Runners will then carry a “torch” from the starting lines and meet back in the middle in New Bern at the Twin Rivers Mall. The relay will immediately be followed by a rally and press conference at Twin Rivers Mall at 1:00pm. Anyone can sign up to walk or run a one mile segment as a part of the relay!
Walk/Run by yourself or sign up with a friend. We have people who have signed up from Duke, Raleigh, and even Charlotte! Sign up before Sunday, March 23. Contact Lance Sellon, event coordinator at lsellon@garberumc.com to sign up for mile, volunteer or for more information.
