How it started...

Night Commute '09

Registered Participants Only
Participant Check In: Friday 27MARCH 7:00pm
Participant Pick Up: Saturday 28MARCH 3:00pm

Students will voluntarily experience a displaced life for two days.
  • Includes: Displace Me Rally, service projects on Saturday, and the night commute itself which includes walking moderate distances, and a single overnight stay outdoors in downtown.
  • After the Rally, participants will walk to an area in the city and sleep in the streets to make a visual call to end night commuting in northern Uganda.
  • Participants will not have access to showers.
  • Participants will go without use of cell phones, MP3 players, and wristwatches for the duration of the event.
  • Participants will not bring any money or valuables.
Focus: A "displaced" person is someone who has been forced from their home because of natural disasters, war, and/or poverty. These children, women, and men live on the streets, under the overpasses, in the parks, and in abandoned buildings all over the world.

Purpose of Event: To raise the community's awareness of displaced people across the world and how following Jesus Christ calls us to action because of that awareness.

Pick up registrations in the Student Center or download here.

Displace Me Rally

OPEN TO PUBLIC
Friday 27MARCH 8:00pm
DOWNTOWN NEW BERN (TBD)

The Displace Me Rally is an effort to raise awareness of the community as to the circumstances and conditions of these displaced people.
Join us for this rally. If you're brave enough, bring a cardboard bed and a sleeping bag and be displaced with us for an evening.

Around this rally we have constructed an experience for group of teenagers and adults that they hopefully will never forget involving service projects and life on the street. They will join us and live a displaced life for 2 simple days.

The Student Ministries of churches across New Bern are collaborating for this once-a-year-event.
